Many people don't have high-end PC's or can't afford to buy consoles. But they love gaming but are limited to a low end hardware. After the introduction and launch of the next-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One gaming has taken a new turn in terms of advancements. The next-gen games are much more graphic intensive and require heavy hardware to run smoothly.
The main purpose of this article is to help those gamers who either have a low-end graphic card or even don't have one.
Note- If your PC is too old then there is no way to even a start a new game. This tutorial or you can say trick is only for those who face lags in games and also its written keeping in mind that you have windows 7/8/8.1. For xp,vista and older versions please search for the options below for yourself.
Now coming to the point.
1. To free up graphics memory
Our main objective is too reduce the graphic memory consumed by the windows desktop graphics. To do this just simply lower the resolution of your monitor to the lowest possible value. (For me 1024x768 is the lowest as i have a 1080p monitor and my graphics chip set doesn't allow me to lower it more than that).
To lower the resolution, right click on desktop and select screen resolution.
After lowering the resolution, change your windows theme to any high contrast theme. There are a few high contrast themes which already come preloaded in windows. Just right click on desktop and go to personalize and select any high contrast theme.
Now your graphics memory is maximum free after doing the above steps.
2. To Clear up RAM
Next step involves clearing RAM. There are many software's available like the infamous Game Booster by IObit. Its no doubt a good software but believe me clearing RAM manually is much more efficient.
Clearing RAM simply means stopping those processes which are not actually used while gaming. For example Google Chrome runs in the background and eats up too much RAM but before playing a game you can force close it or end it which results in more free RAM.
To clear RAM in Windows 8/8.1 -
- Open Task Manager.
- Go to details tab.
- Right click on a process you want to kill and select End process tree.
For windows 7-
Open task manager and go to processes tab and follow the same above step.
Caution:- Don't end any app or program if you don't know what its doing it may result to sudden restart and crashes in your system.
3. Optimal graphics settings in game
Now here comes the interesting part.
Some games when launched for the first time automatically set the graphics settings according to your system hardware but you may still face lags.
If you set all the graphics settings to low in a game practically it should run smoothly but in many games its seen that in lowest graphics they lag but in medium or average they work more smoothly.
This totally depends on the game you are playing.
For instance, GTA 4 is a poorly optimised PC game thats why it horribly lags in very decent PC's.
To get the best settings for your PC you will have to experiment with the game by changing and applying various graphic options.
To test at which setting your game is running best download a free software called FRAPS which hels you to monitor your frames per second or FPS in a game. There is a paid version also but our purpose is fulfilled by the free version.
Remember- More FPS = More smoothness or less lags.
4. Editing the configuration file
If you are on the lowest settings and resolution and still want more smoothness then try this step.
But this step is not applicable to every game. I have tried this on Far Cry 3 & Need for speed hot pursuit 2010.
What you have to do is to simply search for the graphics configuration file of the game you are trying to run in your PC. If you don't know where the file is present in your PC you can simply google it with name of the game to know its location and whether its editable or not.
If you can edit it then you can lower the resolution of your game even lower values like 320x480 or 512x384.
At last always remember that you don't have a graphic card this is just a tutorial for atleast a little bit smoothness in hogh end games rest all depends on your hardware.
